On Friday March 4th, Theta Chapter held it's annual Signature Event, which benefits Kappa's national philanthropy RIF (Reading is Fundamental). This year, the Dr. Seuss-themed event was held at Blue Ridge Elementary School. Kappa Kappa Gamma's Beneficiary Chairman, Amy S., did a wonderful job in planning various events for the kids to participate in. Overall, the Signature Event was a huge success.
Jordan P. poses for a picture with a Blue Ridge student. The kids were ecstatic that they got to make their very own Dr. Seuss hat! With the help from various Kappas, the students cut out a traced hat, decorated it with stripes of different shapes and sizes and secures the hat with a band in the back. Needless to say, the hats were a big hit when it came time to take photographs.
"The Signature Event was so much fun. It was great to see how excited the kids got about reading and receiving a free book. It made me really proud to be a Theta chapter Kappa when we saw how much the students and faculty appreciated the event," Sammy P. said.
Hannah B. is reading one student's book-of-choice at the Signature Event. Each student got to select a free book of their own to take home and read. This was a huge hit amongst the kids at Blue Ridge Elementary School. However, due to the wide variety of selection, many students had a difficult time choosing which book they wanted to take home.
Freshman Kappa, Hope H., reads a book with a Blue Ridge student. Hope Harkins and Abby Darlington both dressed at Thing 1 and Thing 2 in order to contribute to the Dr. Seuss-themed event. The students at Blue Ridge Elementary School instantly recognized who the two girls were intending to portray.
"I really enjoyed reading with the kids. I loved seeing their faces light up. Knowing that I brightened their day made my day twenty times better," Kaylen K. said.
Katie B. takes time to read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" to the students who participated in Kappa's Signature Event. The students listened with anticipation and really enjoyed the story overall. The classes that participated were all first grade classes and showed tons of enthusiasm about the Signature Event.

Erin S. is pictured reading with a student at Blue Ridge Elementary. The children really enjoyed showing off their reading abilities to the Kappas who volunteered at the event by reading them their selected book. It was really exciting to see how much the students and faculty at Blue Ridge appreciated Theta chapter coming in to volunteer for the day.
At the end of the day, the students did not want the Kappa's to leave! It was day of fun and reading for the students of Blue Ridge Elementary School that truly highlighted one of the many positive roles that Theta chapter Kappa Kappa Gamma plays within the community.
